On December 7th, actor Robert Downey Jr. was presented an award for assisting the Make-A-Wish Foundation in granting dozens of wishes. In addition to his work with Make-A-Wish, Mr. Downey Jr. has worked with many other organizations, including the Cancer Research Institute and March of Dimes. Most actors perform philanthropic work in addition to their careers, channeling their fame and fortune towards worthy causes. Though many of these celebrities would like to say that their intentions are solely altruistic, they are motivated by a force that drives many to philanthropy: recognition.
Celebrities aren’t the only ones that want to be recognized for their generosity. Whether it’s helping out the local school district build a new playground, donating to a children’s hospital or renovating an old theater, those who have dedicated their time, effort and money to a project appreciate being recognized. For these volunteers and donors, they aren’t looking for a pricey gift; they’re looking to be remembered, memorialized alongside the project that they helped complete.
When Robert Downey Jr. received his award, he was honored that his legacy in the history books would now include the philanthropy that helped make children’s wishes come true. The trophy didn’t represent “winning” a competition like an Oscar. The award represented the idea that he would be remembered.
Any organization could benefit from incentivizing philanthropic work (or any work) by offering clear recognition for time and effort. Making it a part of your regular awards ceremonies or prominently displaying the list of donors/volunteers is a great morale booster. Don’t think your members or employees are the type to give? If you offer them the incentive of recognition, you may be surprised.
Art glass awards are very popular as donor gifts and volunteer awards. These awards can be displayed as art pieces instead of trophies. Check out other available art glass awards.
Show your appreciation with a crystal award. An engraved memento will symbolize the intangible award of a job well done. Optical crystal awards are available in a variety of sizes and styles for any budget.
