Like many celebrity brides, Jennifer Aniston received countless wedding gifts from friends and family to commemorate the occasion. One such gift was a gorgeous Baccarat crystal vase filled with sunflowers and a heartfelt note. What should have been a perfect gift, however, became a sticking point between Jen and her newlywed husband. Why? Because the vase and flowers were from her ex, Brad Pitt.
Brad’s choice in gift would set off alarms in any spouse’s head. What could have motivated him to make such a poor gift decision? While some tabloid writers like indulging in the fantasy of a jilted lover’s sinister plot, the more likely answer is that Brad just didn’t think about what his gift would mean – to Jennifer or her husband. This mistake is common in gift-giving, especially when personalizing a gift.
What went wrong? Was it inappropriate for Brad to send a gift for his ex-wife’s wedding? Despite their divorce, Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston have remained close friends, so it wouldn’t be unusual for him to send a gift. What about what he gave her? It likely wasn’t the vase. Pretty though it may be, it’s only the vessel through which Brad’s personalized (and misinterpreted) message was carried: the sunflowers and the note.
Brad made the mistake of giving a gift that sent the wrong message. The flowers and note would be more appropriate for a lovers’ relationship, and carried an air of longing or a desire for things to return to the way they were – definitely not something any spouse would be happy about!
How can this be applied to a personalized gift? Using Brad Pitt’s crystal vase as an example, the relationship between the giver and the recipient is the most important context. Giving a vase to an employee is appropriate if there is a congratulatory message about the years of service or hard work the employee has put in. It would be inappropriate for that same vase to be filled with red roses and include a long, thought-out inscription about how wonderful the employee is.
Always be aware of the message your gift is sending – regardless of whether that message is engraved onto the side of the gift or not!
